Caraustar Hikes Prices on All Tubes, Cores, Protective Packaging Products (1/19/2017)

Caraustar Industries Inc., Austell, Ga., USA, this week announced that prices on its paper tube, core, and protective packaging product lines will increase by at least 8%, effective with shipments on or after Feb. 17, 2017. The increase, according to Caraustar, is required to recover escalating costs, including paperboard and other raw materials.

Bosh Introduces Integrated Topload Cartoner (2/24/2017)

Increasing the convenience it offers to customers, Bosch Packaging Technology, Germany, in partnership with recently acquired  Kliklok-Woodman Corp., Decatur, Ga., USA, is  introducing the Kliklok ITC This integrated topload carton forming, loading, and closing solution complements Bosch's current packaging portfolio, and enables it to offer its food customers complete system solutions for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging. The new development boasts one of the highest speeds available for a solution with such a small footprint, and has a large carton size range. This allows manufacturers to save production space and increase product output without compromising quality.

Smurfit Kappa, Sun Chemical Develop New Packaging Coding (2/27/2017)

Smurfit Kappa, Ireland, has collaborated with Sun Chemical Parsippany, N.J., USA, a producer of printing inks and coatings, to deliver a robust and efficient, digital laser-based coding solution that supports customer packaging and labeling requirements. The new coding solution for secondary cartons combines Smurfit Kappa’s flexo printed corrugated boxes with Sun Chemical’s SunLase activated coating system, resulting in high quality, reliable, late stage coding, which allows customers to laser mark packaging at the end of manufacturing operations. With the capacity to laser mark at the typical speed of an automated packing line, it offers a replacement for direct thermal labeling.

U.S. Households Able to Recycle Food and Beverage Cartons Now at 60% (1/26/2017)

The Carton Council of North America, Denton, Texas, USA, this week announced that 60% of U.S. households are currently able to recycle food and beverage cartons through their local recycling programs. This is an important milestone because food and beverage carton recycling is now available to a substantial majority of consumers and, according to the Federal Trade Commission green guidelines, can now carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo.

As reported in the Feb. 9, 2017, issue of Over the Wire, Sappi North America, Boston, Mass., USA, has announced a $165 million capital project to expand its manufacturing capabilities and flexibility to include a variety of consumer packaging products. This investment in PM 1 at the company’s Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, Maine, establishes a strong platform for growth in paper-based packaging while maintaining Sappi's leadership position in the graphic paper market, increasing annual production capacity at this mill to almost 1 million tpy.

Smurfit Kappa to Acquire Litbag (2/17/2017)

Initiative in India to Recycle Tetra Pak Cartons into School Desks (2/17/2017)

In line with its efforts to raise awareness and encourage recycling of used cartons, Tetra Pak, Switzerland, this week announced the launch of Cartons Le Aao, Classroom Banao. This initiative is part of its ongoing flagship program Go Green with Tetra Pak.
