Developing TAPPI Standards

Standards are of the utmost importance in the pulp, paper and converting industries as they have a serious impact on business and trade. As a member, you are eligible to get involved in the process of developing new Standards for the industry.

How to Propose new Standards

Are you interested in proposing a new Standard? We encourage members to consult our complete list of subject categories for Standards below, or view the PDF list.

If you have a general idea for a Standard, you can complete the New Idea Submission Form. We will review your idea and identify the right committee or group to work on your suggestion.

If you already further along, you can send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. A Standards manager will then work with you to develop a Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for the new Standard. This will set in motion the development and review process, which is described in the Standards Guidelines.

TAPPI Standards Guidelines

If you are at the writing stage, or if you are the chairperson of a Standards working group, you can download a copy of our Regulations and Style Guidelines.

In this manual, you will find:

  • How to write a Standard Test Method using proper terminology and format
  • How to write TAPPI Standard Specifications, Glossaries and Guidelines using proper terminology and format
  • What requirements exist for precision statements in Official and Provisional Test Methods
  • A checklist to make sure all required sections have been included in a Standard draft
  • How working group chairperson, working groups and Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs) fit into the process of preparing a Standard
  • How the balloting process works
  • How to resolve comments and negative votes

Webinars
Increasing Paper Machine Agility with a Novel Grade Change Concept

A narrow grade mix and long grade runs were once common. Not today. Most machines make a wider set of products with many grade changes.

Webinars
Boost Mill Wide Productivity with a Common Language Approach

This webinar is about how pulp and paper mills need to evolve from their current "craft" based to a "data" based operation.  This data based operation will lead to view the overall mill process as a unified system.

Webinars
Webinar Increasing Paper Machine Agility with a Novel Grade Change Concept

Learn to assess the performance of their grade change system and see if it can or should be improved as well as how to explain how normal process interactions can make grade change difficult to control well.

Webinars
Advanced Online Process Analyzers for Pulp Mill Control

This webinar will briefly review the technology and give further details on economic impacts achieved through the installation of rugged process online FT-NIR analyzers when coupled with advanced process control strategies.

Webinars
Better Mill Decisions Through Detailed Grade Cost Analysis

Matthew Smith serves as President and CEO of 3C Software headquartered in Atlanta, GA. Prior to taking the leadership post in 2003, Matthew gained experience by working in different roles in the company from sales, software implementation, and project management.

Webinars
The Power of Real-Time Costing

In most operating environments, operators and shift supervisors are focused on their individual operating parameters: keeping the line running and monitoring deviations in selected indicators. In most cases, they have no understanding of the dollar value of the various operating decisions they make and the knock-on impact their decisions may have through the value chain; whether in terms of total added cost or variance in usages.

Webinars
Combat Process Disturbances and PID Loop Interactions

PID loop interactions and process disturbances are a leading source of process variability and instability in all processes. This webinar shows you how to employ new tools to easily obtain the effects of interaction and disturbances on your process (the models) and how to use these to break or eliminate loop interactions and the effects of disturbances.

Webinars
VPA and New Indices for Quantifying and Troubleshooting Sheet Quality

Sheet properties measured both on-line and off-line are often expressed in arrays of values called "profiles" in cross-machine direction (CD) and "trends" in machine direction (MD).  With the computing power, memory capacity, and display technology available in today's quality control and mill-wide systems, a new set of indices and two-dimensional analysis methods can be useful for better quantifying sheet quality and provide more insights for troubleshooting sheet-making processes.

Webinars
Tissue Machine Vibration Monitoring Systems

Condition monitoring, particularly using vibration, is a well-established method for improving and maintaining tissue machine reliability. Using specialized instrumentation and software can help maintenance and operations personnel diagnose problems and plan for appropriate corrective actions. This webinar provides an overview of on-line systems for monitoring both rotating equipment and doctoring systems.
